ready to vax...a post that ended up a rant:( [Aug. 10th, 2009|05:49 pm]
Delaying Vaccination

My son is 20 months. After doing the research, we decided to delay vaccinations and are now ready to start. We moved and found a new doctor. We chose her because from what I read about her, she seemed really breastfeeding-friendly (I tried finding a vax-friendly doc around us, but it seems impossible. Plus, we wanted to get this started and networking, researching at this point will take longer than we'd like...we'll do that after we get settled in and signed up for our new insurance once that starts).

Anyway, we had my son's well-baby appointment today. The nurses and the doc herself looked at me like I was an alien when I told them our son hasn't been vaccinated yet, but that was why we were there, so we could start.

I told the dr. I only wanted one aluminum-containing vaccine at a time. I told her I wasn't interested in the hep B shot at all. She said we would need to come in every 6 weeks to get additional shots (How can they give 6 shots at once, yet you have to wait 6 weeks between shots? even between just 1 or 2?. We talked for about 7 minutes total - not just about vaccines, but about everything. I didn't get a chance to tell her exactly how I felt.

She left and the nurses came back in with 3 or 4 syringes. They said they were giving him 5 vaccines (DTap, hib, pc, MMR, varicella) and were giving us a prescription for polio to take to the Health Department since the only polio shot they have includes hep B.

Since we're new to this, I wasn't aware they were going to just bring in all these shots. I thought we'd be give more information first - info about the side-effects, etc. BEFORE they gave him the shots. Anyway...I said "no." I voiced my concerns to the doctor about the aluminum and the live-virus vaccines (the proceeded to tell us that they took the varicella vaccine out of the freezer and thawed it just for us). She basically said that they can give him the shots we wanted him to have today, but if he didn't get all of them, they wouldn't see him again.

I was so pissed. I'm not good with confrontation. All the reading I've done left me. So the doctor said she would let us think and talk for a while longer. She finally came back and said she would just give us a prescription for all the shots he needs so we can get them done at the Health Department at our own rate. (My husband guessed that after leaving the first time she went to talk with her superior(s) and s/he told her what to do next.)

What gets me: She says "I don't know what's in the vaccines" after I reminded her I only wanted one aluminum-containing vaccine at a time. wtf?!

She said we need 3 HIB and 3 Pc shots; Dr. Sears says after 18 months, all that is needed is 1 shot.

I'm just disgusted at how we were treated - we who educated ourselves and are pro-active in our son's life, ESPECIALLY when it comes to HIS health and his body.

I'm guessing the purpose of this post is to vent. I don't want to get reamed by any friends by posting to my own journal.

Suggestions on how to find a doctor that will respect our wishes? (FWIW, we live in San Angelo, TX, population less-than-100,000 and at least 90 miles from any other "city")

Edited to add: She said my milk didn't have any immunological benefits for a 20-month old, that after he was 6 months, they were gone. (that's my paraphrase of what she said...wtf?!)

Wrong! wrong! wrong! How frustrating! So many people don't educate themselves about their child's care - it's scary that people trust doctors who don't know anything either.

I really loved the mothering.com forum about vaccinations:

especially the subforum about delayed vaxing:
